Comparative Analysis of Core Materials of Mooring Ropes

This diagram clearly illustrates the performance positioning of the four main materials used for mooring lines: UHMWPE, polyester, nylon, and polypropylene.

UHMWPE, with its extremely high strength and very low elongation, is the first choice for deep-sea and precise positioning, but it is also the most expensive. Next is polyester, which offers high strength, dimensional stability, and abrasion resistance, making it the most mainstream choice for commercial ports.

Nylon, with its highest elongation and strongest energy absorption capacity, is an ideal "cushioning" material, often used for shock absorption. Finally, polypropylene offers the lowest cost and is buoyant, suitable for lightweight and temporary applications.

In summary, choosing mooring lines should not be based solely on initial price. While UHMWPE and polyester may be more expensive initially, their lifespan is 3 to 4 times that of nylon, resulting in a lower overall life-cycle cost.
